Al Stewart is a Scottish singer-songwriter and folk-rock musician who rose to fame in the 1970s for his hit songs “Year of the Cat” and “Time Passages.” Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1945, he began his career in the late 1960s playing the London folk circuit. He released his first album, Bedsitter Images, in 1967, followed by Love Chronicles (1969) and Zero She Flies (1970).

His breakthrough album came in 1976 with the release of Year of the Cat. The album was a massive success, producing the hit singles “Year of the Cat” and “On the Border,” and reaching the Top Ten on the UK and US album charts. He followed up with the equally successful Time Passages in 1978, featuring the hit singles “Time Passages” and “Song on the Radio.”

Other standout albums by Stewart include Past, Present & Future (1973), Modern Times (1975), and Sparks of Ancient Light (2008). He has also released several live albums, including Live at the BBC (2002) and Live in New York (2003).

An interesting fact about Al Stewart is that he is an avid collector of books about World War I and World War II. He has written several songs about the wars, including the ballad “Roads to Moscow” from the album Year of the Cat.
