Whitney is the album that confirmed Whitney Houston as one of pop’s great vocal forces. Released in 1987, it built on the success of her debut by sharpening the mix of glossy synth-pop, R&B and balladry into a string of unmistakable singles, including I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me), Didn’t We Almost Have It All and So Emotional. The record showed how Houston could carry both dancefloor energy and emotional weight with ease, turning immaculate production into something urgent and personal. Its commercial success and lasting radio presence helped define late-1980s mainstream pop and R&B.
