Walter Carlos' Clockwork Orange is a striking electronic reimagining of music associated with Stanley Kubrick's film, bringing classical repertoire into a radical synthesiser setting. Issued in 1972, the album follows Carlos's groundbreaking work on Switched-On Bach and shows how the Moog could be used for more than novelty, turning Beethoven, Purcell and Rossini into something unsettling, precise and newly futuristic. The programme links film themes and adapted concert works, including the famous Ninth Symphony material, and helped confirm Carlos as one of the key pioneers of electronic music and modern classical crossover.
