Rattle and Hum is the sprawling companion piece to U2’s elevation into global stadium rock, folding live performances and new studio recordings into a meditation on American roots music. Issued in 1988, the album channels blues rock, gospel and folk influences through songs such as Desire, Angel of Harlem and When Love Comes to Town, while live versions of earlier favourites underline the band’s growing scale and confidence. Produced with Daniel Lanois, it captures U2 at a moment when they were stretching beyond post-punk origins into a more expansive, spiritually charged sound. The album also accompanied the concert film of the same name, reinforcing its place in the band’s late-1980s mythology.
