Songs such as Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis, Romeo Is Bleeding and Kentucky Avenue helped define his gift for vivid characters and hard-living detail. The album marked an important step in his evolution from barroom balladeer to singular American chronicler, and remains one of his most admired records.
