The Rutles is a brilliantly observed Beatles parody that works as a pop album in its own right. Created by Eric Idle and Neil Innes, with a film and soundtrack concept that skewered Beatlemania from the inside, it blends affectionate mimicry with sturdy songwriting, musical wit and sharp period detail. The hooks, harmonies and faux-archive polish make songs such as Cheese And Onions, Doubleback Alley and Another Day feel both familiar and slyly original. Released in 1978, it became a cult favourite and a showcase for how parody can succeed by understanding exactly what it is sending up.
