About this album
Aftermath is the Rolling Stones’ first great album of original material, and a crucial step in their move from blues revivalists to fully fledged songwriters. Released in 1966, it sharpened their R&B roots into something tougher and more distinctive, while Brian Jones’ inventive playing on sitar, marimba and dulcimer widened the group’s sound dramatically. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards supplied songs that became Stones landmarks, including Under My Thumb, Lady Jane and Mother’s Little Helper. Widely regarded as one of the band’s defining 1960s albums, it helped establish the swagger, wit and bite that would shape their peak years.
