    The Phantom of the Opera is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous stage work and a defining late-20th-century musical. First staged in 1986 and cast on record in 1987, it fused Gothic melodrama with sweeping theatrical hooks, turning the masked Phantom, Christine and Raoul into figures familiar far beyond the theatre. With lyrics by Charles Hart and orchestration that moves from brooding prologue to soaring ballads such as The Music of the Night and All I Ask of You, the score helped make musical theatre a global commercial force. Its long-running success in London and on Broadway confirmed its status as a modern classic.
