About this album
Modern Romans is one of The Call’s strongest and most focused albums, sharpening the band’s politically aware rock into a taut new wave statement. Released in 1983, it followed their self-titled debut and found the Santa Cruz group tightening their sound around crisp guitar lines, urgent rhythms and Michael Been’s impassioned voice. The album’s best-known song, The Walls Came Down, helped define their reputation for intelligent, socially conscious songwriting, while the rest of the record sustains the same directness and tension. Modern Romans showed The Call translating post-punk energy into accessible, durable American rock.
