About this album
Sweetheart Of The Rodeo is the album that helped define country rock, with The Byrds folding Nashville instrumentation into their Laurel Canyon sensibility. Released in 1968, it marked a striking shift from the band’s earlier folk-rock sound towards a more roots-minded approach, drawing on material by Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons and other country and traditional songwriters. The record was controversial at the time, but its long-term influence was enormous: it became a touchstone for generations of country-rock, Americana and alt-country artists. Its mix of steel guitar, harmony singing and sharp songcraft made it one of The Byrds’ most important and enduring statements.
