Smiley Smile distils The Beach Boys’ most adventurous ideas into a deliberately odd, lo-fi 1967 album. Emerging from the collapse of the ambitious Smile project, it turns fragments such as Heroes and Villains and Vegetables into something stranger, looser and more intimate, with tape experiments, baroque harmonies and playful studio invention replacing the polished pop of their earlier work. Rather than a conventional retreat, the record showed Brian Wilson and the band embracing experimental pop on their own terms. Its miniature scale and eccentric beauty helped make it a cult favourite and an important waypoint in the Beach Boys’ late-1960s evolution.
