The B-52's is a landmark debut that turned off-kilter humour, surf riffs and dance-floor momentum into one of new wave’s most distinctive statements. Released in 1979, the album introduced the Athens, Georgia band’s call-and-response vocals, ramshackle organ textures and playful absurdism, all driven by the punch of songs like Rock Lobster, Planet Claire and Dance This Mess Around. Produced by Chris Blackwell and recorded with a deliberately spare, live feel, it made oddity sound immediate and hugely contagious. Its success helped define the band’s cult appeal and left a lasting imprint on post-punk, indie rock and alternative pop.
