Released in 1976, it draws together psychedelic guitar, prog ambition and West Coast melodic colour into a singular cosmic sound. The record features Hillage’s fluid, effects-laden playing alongside extended pieces such as the title suite and electrified reworkings of songs like Hurdy Gurdy Man and It’s All Too Much, showing both his improv-heavy roots and his gift for expansive songcraft. Produced by Todd Rundgren, L helped establish Hillage as a distinctive solo voice after his work with Gong, and remains a key album in British psychedelic and space-rock circles.
