Pretzel Logic is one of Steely Dan’s sharpest early statements, sharpening the band’s mix of sardonic lyrics, airtight musicianship and jazz-inflected pop-rock. Released in 1974, it followed the success of Countdown to Ecstasy and helped establish the duo’s reputation for meticulous studio craft and literate songwriting. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker push beyond straightforward rock here, folding in piano-led hooks, horn colours and a cooler, more elusive edge, while Rikki Don’t Lose That Number became one of their best-known songs. The album’s blend of precision, irony and melodic ease made it a key bridge between radio-friendly rock and more ambitious, harmony-rich studio pop.
