    South Of Heaven is the album where Slayer proved thrash could be heavier by pulling back the speed. Released in 1988, it followed the ferocity of Reign in Blood with a darker, more measured attack that expanded the band’s reach without softening their edge. Produced by Slayer and Rick Rubin, the record balances pit-ready aggression with unsettling restraint, and songs such as the title track and Mandatory Suicide became key parts of the band’s canon. Widely regarded as one of their most important albums, it helped define the band’s late-1980s peak and broadened the boundaries of extreme metal.
