Once Upon a Time is the album that made Simple Minds a major international pop-rock force. Released in 1985, it follows the band’s move from artful post-punk towards widescreen, synthesiser-led anthems, with Jim Kerr’s soaring vocals and Mel Gaynor’s propulsive drumming pushing the sound into stadium territory. Produced by Jimmy Iovine and featuring landmark singles such as Alive and Kicking and Sanctify Yourself, the record balanced radio-ready melody with the grandeur that defined mid-1980s arena rock. It became one of the group’s biggest commercial successes and remains a key statement of their imperial phase.
