Bookends is Simon & Garfunkel at their most ambitious, turning elegant folk-rock into a suite about memory, youth and disillusionment. Issued in 1968, the album moves between intimate songs and brief spoken-word or instrumental interludes, creating a tightly planned sequence that gave their writing a new sense of scale. Produced by Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel and Roy Halee, it includes one of the duo’s defining hits, Mrs. Robinson, alongside A Hazy Shade of Winter and America. Its blend of melodic polish, social commentary and conceptual flow helped make it one of the most admired albums of the late 1960s.
