    About this album

    Sea Level’s self-titled debut is a lively fusion of Southern rock, jazz-rock and jazz-funk that gave the Allman Brothers family tree a looser, more exploratory voice. Formed by Chuck Leavell, Lamar Williams and Jaimoe after the Allman Brothers’ mid-1970s upheaval, the group turned musicianship into groove rather than showy soloing. The album balances driving rock energy with supple keyboards, elastic bass lines and percussive detail, while originals such as Rain In Spain and Shake A Leg underline its rhythmic snap. Issued in 1977, it helped establish Sea Level as one of the most distinctive crossover bands of the era.
