Diamond Life is the elegant debut that turned Sade into a global crossover act. Released in 1984, the album blended smooth soul, jazz and pop with a restraint that stood apart from much of the decade’s glossy radio fare. Produced by Robin Millar, it introduced Sade Adu’s velvety vocals and the band’s poised, late-night groove on songs such as Smooth Operator, Your Love Is King and Hang On to Your Love. A major international success, the record helped define sophisti-pop and remains one of the most distinctive British pop debuts of the 1980s.
