    Benefactor is Romeo Void’s most fully realised statement, sharpening the San Francisco band’s post-punk edge into sleek, tension-filled new wave. Released in 1982, the album centres on Debora Iyall’s incisive vocals and sardonically observant lyrics, with Ben Bossi’s saxophone and the band’s lean rhythm section giving the songs a restless, urban pulse. Best known for “Never Say Never”, which became an alternative-radio landmark, the record helped bring the group wider attention while keeping their off-kilter identity intact. Its combination of wit, bite and nightclub cool made Benefactor one of the era’s most distinctive American new wave albums.
