  • It was the release of "Talk Tight" in 2016 that placed Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever on the musical map and made publications such as SPIN, Stereogum and Pitchfork sit up and take notice in the best possible way. In the already incredibly productive music scene of Melbourne this band stood out once again. Crunchy riffs, quick drums and witty puns, for example, tore Pitchfork to praise "Talk Tight" for the "precision of the melodies, the arrangements that get to the point and the constantly latent melancholic undertone"

The band was formed from nightly jam sessions in the bedroom of singer/guitarist Fran Keaney and continued to evolve in the live venues of Melbourne. The members shared their musical preferences and songwriting, so cousins Joe White and Fran Keaney, brothers Tom and Joe Russo and drummer Marcel Tussie started with more melodic songs. But the more concerts they played, the more of these driving rhythms came to the surface that now characterize all of their songs. Concerts and festivals did the rest to strengthen the sound of the band

And then Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever went from strength to strength. "The French Press" reinforces everything that "Talk Tight" already stood for. Multitrack melodies enmesh themselves and the galloping duo of drums and bass give each track its own forward drive. Lyrically, the songs of Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever have always had the quality of a good novel, the pages of which the reader rushes through, and "The French Press" makes no difference

Somewhere between impressionists and fable poets Fran Keaney, Tom Russo and Joe White often start with something from real life - like the melancholy of travelling on "French Press" - and turn this fact into short-lived, witty vignettes. As a result, they blur the boundaries between imagination and truth; living stories that come closer to reality than anything else. "The French Press" combines critical insights with wordy love songs and finally establishes Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever as one of Australia's smartest bands.

    Reviews

"The Australians play and sing their way through their third EP at an unlikely pace, with freshness, youthfulness and power." (Audio, August 2017)
