Secrets is a sharp, stylish showcase for Robert Palmer’s pop-rock instincts at the end of the 1970s. Released in 1979, the album bridged his earlier soul and rock leanings with a tighter, more radio-ready sound, helping set up the harder-edged commercial success that followed in the early 1980s. Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor) became the standout hit and one of Palmer’s signature songs, while the rest of the record keeps his cool, controlled vocal style at the centre. It captures an artist refining a distinctive identity just as rock, pop and new wave were converging.
