Released in 1988, it pushed rap into louder, denser and more confrontational territory through the production of The Bomb Squad, whose collage of samples, sirens and hard-edged rhythm gave songs like Bring the Noise, Don’t Believe the Hype and Rebel Without a Pause their relentless force. Chuck D’s commanding delivery and Flavor Flav’s chaotic counterpoint turned militant politics into a powerful mass message. Widely regarded as a landmark of conscious hip-hop, it helped reshape the sound and ambition of the genre.
