Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is Pavement’s breakthrough album and one of the defining indie rock records of the 1990s. Released in 1994, it sharpened the band’s loose, lo-fi beginnings into something bigger, catchier and more assured without losing its off-kilter charm. Guided by Stephen Malkmus’s sardonic writing and the group’s melodic instinct, the album balanced ragged energy with hooks that made songs like Cut Your Hair, Gold Soundz and Range Life scene-defining touchpoints. Its blend of irony, invention and pure songwriting helped cement Pavement’s reputation as one of American indie rock’s most influential bands.
