About this album
Radio Ethiopia is a fierce, confrontational statement from Patti Smith Group, pushing punk beyond three-chord speed into something wilder and more literary. Released in 1976, the album followed the breakthrough of Horses and showed Smith broadening her sound with longer, more abrasive performances, from the swagger of Ask the Angels to the aching sweep of Pissing in a River. Produced by Jack Douglas, it blends garage rock grit, new wave urgency and freeform intensity into one of the era’s most uncompromising major-label rock records. Its mix of poetry, feedback and nerve helped cement Smith’s reputation as a singular voice in American rock.
