Joe Pass and Oscar Peterson give Porgy & Bess a refined, conversational jazz setting that highlights melody, swing and mutual invention. Drawing on George and Ira Gershwin’s songs from the 1935 opera, the 1976 album finds two masters in close interplay: Peterson’s full, buoyant piano sound and Pass’s fluid guitar lines answer each other with remarkable ease. Rather than treating the material as a standard jazz vehicle, they bring out its theatrical drama and emotional contour, making familiar pieces such as Summertime, It Ain’t Necessarily So and I Loves You, Porgy feel freshly shaded. It stands as a fine example of duo jazz at the highest level.
