    Old And New Dreams is a vital late-1970s free-jazz statement, bringing together former Ornette Coleman collaborators Don Cherry, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell. Recorded in 1979, the album finds the quartet extending Coleman’s open-ended language while sounding distinctly like a group with its own voice: lyrical, rhythmically alert and tightly coiled. Pieces such as Lonely Woman and Open Or Close show how the band could move between searching lyricism and collective drive without losing clarity. Widely regarded as one of the group’s key recordings, it captures four master improvisers balancing freedom, swing and deep melodic feeling.
