    A fiery live Miles Davis set, In Person Friday And Saturday Nights At The Blackhawk, San Francisco documents one of his finest early-’60s bands in full flight. Recorded at the Black Hawk in 1961 and issued the same year, it captures Davis with a quintet that could stretch hard bop into open-ended, modal territory without losing momentum or bite. The performances on tunes such as ‘Walkin’’ and ‘So What’ show how sharply the group could balance precision, daring and swing in a club setting. As a live statement from a pivotal period, it remains one of Davis’s most revealing post-bop recordings.
