    Miles Ahead is a landmark collaboration between Miles Davis and arranger Gil Evans, and one of the most elegant statements in cool jazz. Issued in 1957, it finds Davis’s muted trumpet set against Evans’s richly textured orchestral writing, creating a cinematic sound that broadened the possibilities of modern jazz. Rather than a conventional big-band showcase, the album unfolds like a carefully shaped suite, with pieces such as The Duke and My Ship revealing Davis’s lyrical restraint and Evans’s gift for colour. Its influence on orchestral jazz was immense, and it remains one of Davis’s most admired studio achievements.
