Hergest Ridge is Mike Oldfield’s ambitious second album and a key early statement of British prog. Issued in 1974, it followed the breakthrough of Tubular Bells and showed Oldfield extending his melodic, multi-layered approach into a longer, more reflective work. Recorded with Oldfield playing most of the instruments himself and shaped into two continuous sides, the album combines folk-tinged themes, shifting textures and gradual dynamic build. Its original reception was divided, but Hergest Ridge has since become widely regarded as one of Oldfield’s most important releases, helping establish his reputation for large-scale, self-contained instrumental composition.
