Bad is Michael Jackson’s sleek, high-stakes follow-up to Thriller and one of the defining pop albums of the 1980s. Released in 1987, it leaned harder into funk, disco and synth-pop, with Quincy Jones again steering the production and Jackson asserting more control over the writing. The album delivered a run of enduring singles, including Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror, Dirty Diana and Smooth Criminal, and became the first album to produce five US number-one singles. Its scale, polish and ambition confirmed Jackson as the era’s dominant pop star while widening the sound of mainstream pop.
