About this album
Transformer is Lou Reed’s breakthrough solo statement and one of glam rock’s defining albums. Released in 1972 and produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson, it sharpened Reed’s Velvet Underground edge into something more direct, stylish and commercially potent. ‘Walk On the Wild Side’ became his signature hit, while ‘Perfect Day’, ‘Satellite of Love’ and ‘Vicious’ helped give the record its lasting reach beyond the underground. Its mix of streetwise observation, decadence and melodic precision made Reed a crucial voice of early-1970s rock, and a lasting influence on alternative and art-rock songwriting.
