Rock N Roll Animal is one of Lou Reed’s most distinctive live albums, recasting Velvet Underground material as a swaggering hard-rock showcase. Recorded in 1973 and released in 1974, it finds Reed backed by a muscular band led by guitarist Dick Wagner, whose twin-guitar arrangements turned songs such as Heroin and White Light/White Heat into far more bombastic performances than their original studio versions. The album divided some critics at the time, but its theatrical edge and heavy-guitar power helped cement Reed’s solo identity beyond the Velvet Underground and made it a key document of his early 1970s career.
