Stateless is Lene Lovich’s sharp, theatrical new wave breakthrough and one of the era’s most distinctive debut statements. Released in 1978, it introduced her wiry voice, off-kilter phrasing and art-pop instincts to a wider audience, with the hit Lucky Number giving the album its best-known hook. Blending angular rock energy, cabaret drama and nervy post-punk attitude, the record helped define Lovich as an outsider talent with real pop instinct. Its mix of eccentricity and accessibility made Stateless a cult favourite and an enduring landmark of late-1970s British new wave.
