The Dreaming is Kate Bush at her most adventurous and uncompromising, turning art pop into something stranger, denser and more theatrical. Released in 1982, her fourth album was largely self-produced and drew on the Fairlight CMI to build a sound that felt both experimental and immediate. Songs such as Sat in Your Lap, Suspended in Gaffa and the title track show her stretching pop form with layered vocals, uneasy rhythms and vivid, surreal imagery. Though initially less commercial than its predecessor, the album has come to be regarded as one of Bush’s boldest statements and a key influence on later art-pop and alternative artists.
