About this album
John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is a stark, searing solo debut that turned personal confession into one of rock’s most uncompromising albums. Released in 1970 after the break-up of the Beatles began to take hold, it stripped away ornament in favour of raw vocals, piano, guitar and relentless emotional candour. Working with producer Phil Spector and drawing on the cathartic impact of primal therapy, Lennon turned songs such as Mother, Working Class Hero and God into direct statements of grief, anger and self-examination. Its honesty and brutal simplicity made the album a landmark in post-Beatles rock and one of Lennon’s defining artistic statements.
