My Favorite Things is a landmark John Coltrane album that helped redefine modern jazz. Issued in 1961, it marked a major step in his move beyond hard bop into modal improvisation, with Coltrane’s soprano saxophone transforming the title song into a hypnotic, searching statement. Backed by McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis and Elvin Jones, the quartet extended standards such as ‘Everytime We Say Goodbye’, ‘Summertime’ and ‘But Not For Me’ into longer, more exploratory forms. The album became one of Coltrane’s best-known recordings and a key document of his restless artistic expansion.
