About this album
Ascension (Edition II) is one of John Coltrane’s most radical and influential statements, a landmark in free jazz that pushed his post-bop language into collective improvisation. Recorded in 1965 and issued in 1966, the piece pairs Coltrane’s searing tenor with a large ensemble including Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, Freddie Hubbard and McCoy Tyner, moving between blazing solos and densely layered group passages. Its two-part structure gives shape to music that still feels untamed, and its impact on modern jazz has been immense. For many listeners, it marked the point where Coltrane’s late style became fully visionary and uncompromising.
