Joe Jackson’s Jumpin’ Jive is a smart, stylish revival that treats swing and jump blues as living music rather than nostalgia. Issued in 1981, the album finds Jackson leading Jumpin’ Jive through a set rooted in 1930s and 1940s jazz and R&B, including material associated with Louis Jordan and other classic bandleaders. The record’s brisk tempos, horn-led arrangements and playful vocals give standards such as Five Guys Named Moe and Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby fresh bite, while preserving the genre’s humour and drive. It became one of Jackson’s most distinctive releases and helped broaden his reputation beyond new-wave pop.
