Okie is one of J.J. Cale’s most important albums, refining the understated Tulsa sound that made him so influential. Released in 1974, it strips rock and blues down to a cool, conversational groove, with Cale’s relaxed vocals, clipped guitar and unshowy songwriting carrying the weight. Tracks such as Cajun Moon, I’d Like to Love You Baby and Anyway the Wind Blows show how he could make economy feel rich and lived-in. Produced with characteristic restraint, the album helped define a low-key, rootsy approach that later shaped players from Eric Clapton to countless Americana artists.
