Concierto is one of Jim Hall’s finest jazz statements, balancing cool restraint with melodic invention and a quietly adventurous spirit. Recorded in 1975 and issued on CTI, the album features Hall with Ron Carter, Chet Baker and Paul Desmond, plus Pat Metheny on the title piece, bringing together some of the most distinctive voices in modern jazz. Its centrepiece is a graceful reading of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, reimagined as an intimate chamber-jazz work rather than a display of virtuosity. The record helped confirm Hall’s reputation as a guitarist of unusual elegance, depth and harmonic subtlety.
