About this album
Pearl is Janis Joplin’s finest solo statement, combining searing blues-rock with soul grit and unfiltered emotional force. Released in 1971 and credited to the Full Tilt Boogie Band, it was her final studio album and the one that most completely realised her blend of rough-edged power and interpretive depth. Producer Paul A. Rothchild gave the sessions a taut, polished frame while letting Joplin’s voice stay front and centre on landmarks such as Me and Bobby McGee, Cry Baby and Move Over. The album became a posthumous breakthrough, topping the US charts and cementing Joplin’s reputation as one of rock’s most distinctive singers.
