About this album
The Pleasure Principle is the album that cemented Gary Numan’s stark, futuristic vision and helped define late-1970s synth-pop. Released in 1979 after the success of Tubeway Army’s Replicas, it presented Numan as a solo artist and pushed rock’s vocabulary towards machine-like textures, icy melodies and detached vocal drama. Built around analogue synthesizers and taut electronic arrangements, the album’s best-known song, Cars, became a major international hit and a signature of the era. Its blend of pop instinct and alienated mood made it one of the key touchstones of British new wave and electronic music.
