Ghost Writer is one of Garland Jeffreys’ strongest albums, blending pop rock, rock and roll and reggae-tinged street poetry with real bite. Released in 1977, it sharpened his reputation as a New York outsider with a vivid sense of place and identity, moving easily between urban tension, romance and social observation. The title track and ‘Wild in the Streets’ capture his knack for direct, memorable songwriting, while the album’s mix of grit and melodic ease helped make him a cult favourite. It remains a fine example of late-1970s American rock that refuses easy genre boundaries.
