Entertainment! is Gang Of Four’s landmark debut and one of post-punk’s defining statements. Released in 1979, it set sharp, angular guitars against taut funk rhythms and Andy Gill’s clipped, abrasive playing, while Jon King’s lyrics turned consumer culture, power and desire into hard-edged social critique. The result was a record that sounded stripped-back and urgent, yet deeply original, helping shape the sound of alternative rock, indie guitar music and danceable post-punk alike. Its influence has only grown with time, and it remains widely regarded as one of the era’s most important British albums.
