Joe's Garage Act I is one of Frank Zappa’s most pointed and accessible satirical albums, turning rock music itself into the target. Issued in 1979 as the first part of a three-act concept, it follows the misadventures of Joe through a near-future world of censorship, lust and absurdity, with Zappa mixing jazz-rock intricacy, blues-rock drive and deadpan humour. The record features some of his most memorable songs and spoken-word passages, including The Central Scrutinizer and Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?, and it helped cement his reputation as a composer as well as a provocateur. Fiercely arranged and darkly comic, it remains a key entry in his catalogue.
