Watermark is the album that turned Enya from a cult Celtic vocalist into a global new-age star. Released in 1988, it pairs her multi-tracked voice with lush keyboards and gentle, drifting arrangements shaped by producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan. The title track, Storms in Africa and the international hit Orinoco Flow gave the record its signature mix of atmosphere and pop clarity, while the instrumental passages helped define a more polished, accessible form of Celtic-influenced ambient music. Its commercial success made Watermark a landmark of late-1980s crossover pop.
