Once Upon a Time in the West is one of Ennio Morricone’s defining film scores, turning a western soundtrack into something mythic and unmistakably modern. Written for Sergio Leone’s 1968 film, the music builds from spare motifs, whistling, electric guitar, trumpet and full orchestral colour to create a tense, mournful and deeply cinematic world. Themes such as the harmonica figure and Jill’s music helped make the score one of Morricone’s most celebrated achievements, and a landmark in film music for its fusion of classical technique, pop sensibility and emotional force. Its influence can still be heard across cinema and popular culture.
