Tarkus is Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s breakthrough prog statement, a record that turned keyboard firepower, dynamic drumming and shifting time signatures into one of the era’s defining rock spectacles. Released in 1971, it follows the band’s self-titled debut and builds around the side-long title suite, a multi-part work that became central to their reputation for technical daring and conceptual scale. Alongside shorter songs such as Bitches Crystal and Jeremy Bender, the album balances bombast with sharper melodic writing. A key early release for the trio, Tarkus helped establish progressive rock as a major force in early 1970s rock.
