Rock of the Westies is a punchier, more hard-edged chapter in Elton John’s 1970s peak, pairing his melodic gift with a tougher rock band sound. Released in 1975, it was his tenth studio album and the first after the departure of longtime guitarist Davey Johnstone and drummer Nigel Olsson, giving the record a slightly different feel while keeping Bernie Taupin’s vivid, character-led lyrics at the centre. Produced by Gus Dudgeon, it includes the hit single Island Girl and favourites such as Dan Dare (Pilot of the Future) and Grow Some Funk of Your Own. A major chart success, it extended John’s run as one of pop’s most consistent hitmakers.
